General GPD Windows Reinstall Guide
Hi there!
This is a brief guide to show you how you can reinstall windows on your GPD device.
If you're here, it probably means something has gone wrong, and your GPD laptop/PC isn't working, so we'll not mince words and get straight to things!
You can get the latest firmware for the GPD devices from these links:
WIN 2: https://drive.google.com/file/d/118_3Btf575460cKiW_ohRsodyGLUjIZg/view
Pocket 2 & P2 Max: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ryaMy7JGwSC__lzOU_rqzOtAmzhS0fpu/view
Micro PC: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yOrtBo8DI66KeJBscwArkAzEXV4ue5PC/view
WIN Max: https://drive.google.com/file/d/152xHiHqRIUBmIopz6XQERUgcQRWqosOv/view
Note: The latest firmware downloads for these devices may not be the actual current/latest version of Windows 10. We or GPD cannot guarantee that the device will work should you update Windows 10 to newer versions.
Step 1) Prepare the USB
Get a USB flash drive large enough to contain all the files. You must then format it. This will remove all data from the drive.
Formatting can be done natively in Windows 10 by right-clicking the drive in file explorer, like so:
Once in the format menu, select "NTFS" as the file system, and make sure the volume label reads "WINPE". Once done, click "Start".
There are numerous other utilities you can use however, either for Windows, Mac and even Linux. The important thing is that there is a single NTFS partition called "WINPE". It does not matter how this is achieved.
If it is not NTFS, it probably won't work. If it is not called WINPE, it definitely will not work.
Step 2) Copy the files over
Download the firmware for your model of choice from above. It will be a zip file that is anywhere from approximately 8GB to 16GB in size.
Extract the contents of this zip file, and copy them over to the USB flash drive you prepared in the previous step.
Your USB flash drive should now look vaguely like this:
If it doesn't match exactly, that is fine. The folders present will vary depending on the specific device.
Step 3) Boot into the USB
There are three ways that this can be done.
- Selecting the USB drive in the BIOS (press ESC during boot)
- Selecting the USB drive in the boot menu (press F7 during boot)
- Selecting the USB drive from the Advanced Boot Options in Windows 10 (hold left-shift when selecting "Restart" in Windows 10)
We'll be concerned with the second one, as it is the simplest.
Insert the USB drive into the device, then power it on. While it is powering on, press "F7" until you are met with a list of various devices. On the Win Max, it would look like this:
Select the one that corresponds to your USB drive from the list (if it is a SanDisk model, it may have "Sandisk" in the name; if it is a Kingston one, it might have Kingston in the name; etc.).
In the above image, we've used a Toshiba stick, so we'll select "UEFI: TOSHIBA Transmemory[...]"
The installation will now proceed automatically. Once finished, the system will boot into a fresh install of Windows 10.
